History of Southwest Pickleball Association
The Southwest Colorado Pickleball Association (SWCPA) began in March 2017 with just 35 dedicated players who shared a simple but powerful vision: to grow the sport of pickleball in Durango and create a welcoming community for everyone who loves the game. Thanks to the passion, volunteerism, and generosity of our board, members, and community, that vision flourished—today, our association has grown to more than 400 members strong.
From the beginning, our primary goal was clear: work collaboratively with city and county partners to secure a location for Durango’s first dedicated, outdoor, public pickleball courts. In June 2024, that dream became a reality with the opening of six dedicated courts at Schneider Park—an achievement made possible by the unwavering support of our members.
As our pickleball community continues to grow, so does the need for additional courts to play on. The current board remains committed to advocating for exploring options for more courts, expanding opportunities for play, and strengthening the pickleball community in Durango.
In November 2025, to better reflect our identity and our connection to the community we serve, the Board proudly adopted a new name: the Durango Pickleball Association.
Together, we look forward to shaping the future of pickleball in Durango—on and off the court.
