The City of Durango has received two bids for the construction of outdoor pickleball courts at Schneider Park. Both bids significantly exceeded the amount of funds the city had originally budgeted for this project. The allocation of funds necessary to build these courts will be discussed by the Financial Advisory Board this Thursday (7/13) starting at 5:30. The Financial Advisory Board will make a recommendation to the Durango City Council. The City Council will meet on August 1st at 5:30 to decide whether to move forward with the project. Both meetings will take place in the City Council Chamber at 949 E. 2nd Ave. We are asking members to attend these meetings to show their support of the project. We are getting close to having a public place to play outdoor pickleball. Please help demonstrate our commitment by attending these meetings and expressing your appreciation for the city’s planning and generosity.

With winter approaching and the assumption there will be  limited outdoor play the Durango Rec Center has requested the following be shared with our members.

    Pickleball Guidelines and Rotation Rules

Durango Recreation Center pickleball is an inclusive program. All Skill levels are welcome.  Please be considerate of everyone by following the guidelines below.  The purpose of which is to make the Durango Recreation Center pickleball fun for ALL players of ALL abilities.  Please be considerate of others and join us in the spirit in which this program is intended.

    Rules & Guidelines:

If you are waiting to get on a court, place your paddle in the rotation queue.  Players will be called onto the open courts in paddle order.  Do not move your paddle once it is in the queue.  If you want to move your paddle to mix up the rotation, move it to the end of the queue.

There are NO set partnerships at the Durango Recreation Center with the current pick-up pickleball play. All paddles will be placed individually in the rotation queue.  Only (1) paddle per player can be entered into the queue. All paddles must have players name on their paddle.

Games end when one side has 11 points, win by 2.

Determination of 2 on 2 off or 4 on 4 off:

When (3) courts are in play and there are (7) or less paddles in the queue it will be 2 on 2 off. When there are (8) or more paddles in the queue with (3) courts it will be 4 on 4 off.

When (4) courts are in play and there are (11) paddles in the queue it will be 2 on 2 off.  When there are (12) paddles or more in the queue with 4 courts it will be 4 on 4 off.

Maximum games played is (2).  Once a player / team plays (2) consecutive games they must come off the court.

To avoid crossing over courts when play is over on your court, all players still in play should slide in the direction towards the windows to an open court.

Please adhere to level of play times on published schedule. (see below)

Setting up additional nets in Gym 1 is not permitted unless approved by Recreation Center staff.
